The Passage Week 2
We are now only 500 miles from the Marquesas Islands, Latitude 10 S, Longitude 130.3 W. Only 4 days left to go.
We have had a few days this week that storms passed through, 20-30 MPH winds and rain. But as a result the boat was making great time under sail. Fishing has been very good. We caught a King Mackerel for a change of pace (very good eating fish). Yesterday Mike caught a 30Lb Tuna and last night we had really fresh sushi. It was one of those meals, good food, friends, conversation and music that you just don’t forget.
Being at sea gives you a lot of time to contemplate things. So I have been thinking of how to desc ribe a 3000 mile 18 day passage to a land lubber, so here goes.
You go out and buy a real nice big R.V. with Kitchen, bedrooms, frig/freezer all the amenities you can get. Than you stock it full of food for an 18 day trip. Oh yea you need a large fuel tank (1500gal.) because you don’t have sails and you can not stop and pull over for anything, no ice cream, McDonalds, gas, nothing. Once the 3 of you (pick good travel companions) get in the R.V. your going to drive across the country 6 times at 30 MPH. That will take you 18 days to do. You do everything in the R.V., take turns driving (you never stop), cook, shower, wash your clothes etc… That’s the best I can do describe it.
There are some differences. You get a change of scenery; we see the ocean all the time. You do not have big seas (8-10 ft) unless you go down some very bad roads. Than we have fishing, catching Tuna or Mahi Mahi and your equivalent would be road Kill. So yes you can stop to pick up road kill. On the plus side=2 0we do have an open cockpit so we can experience the environment all the time. But you could get the same thing if you got a convertible R.V… Now there’s a thought.
We are going to wait until next week to publish the 2 year schedule. We want to first see how long we can stay in French Polynesia, which include the Marquesas to Tahiti and Bora Bora.
So next week you will get the schedule and an update on our landfall in the Marquesas.
Love Gary
Gary- We seem to remember an RV trip with you..maybe not 18 days, but it was non stop for 8 days! We envy your stop in Bora Bora. Stay there as long as possible, it truly is paradise. Love- Sue & Emil
