We’ve been in Spanish speaking countries since we left Florida in April. That’s a long time. My Spanish definitely got a little better and Mike started to pick up a few words here and there. I even heard Gary actually say Gracias the last few days we were in the Galapagos… So now I know how long it takes to get Dos Dawsons going on a new language…..Let the French Lessons begin!
Today I have given to the crew (Mike & Gary) a few words in French for the next few days to learn. I figure by the time we get to Marqueses they will have at least Merci down pat.
It’s quite funny (as are most things here these days) to hear two grown men attempt their first words in French. No more slapping an O on the end of every word. Now Mike just adds ‘Le’ in front of everything and thinks that helps….who knows, maybe it will. However, if you know anything about the French language you know the spelling and the pronunciation are quite different. Ex: Please in French is S’ il vous plait, yet pronounced seel voo pleh. Now you can just imagine Mike and Gary’s pronunciation…sil vows plate, now add a cockney accent to it and you now know what we’re dealing with here. (Don’t know where the cockney came from but they both do it and don’t even know it.)
Anyway, we are sailing along on day 5 at sea. We had to motor a bit the last two days but have picked up some good winds today and once again have the spinnaker out. We are moving along well at 8 kts. We are definitely reaching our 150nm per day so far. We had an issue with the hot water heater on the Starboard side last night…apparently it blew up, leaked…whatever…..there was water in the hull. I kept hearing the bilge pump working and took a look and saw the water. I woke Mike up and we pumped it out and turned off the pump. Gary got up and investigated and fixed the problem. All was well again til this morning when I turned on the water maker and we still had no water. That would be because the water heater hose came off and all the water was draining in the hull again….so again, Mike and I pumped it out and Mike fixed it. Alas, all is well and we have water only where we are supposed to now.
We keep busy at sea playing wii, watching movies, reading, fishing, working out (not so much) and doing odds and ends around the boat. We still have plenty of food from the U.S. and some from the other countries we’ve been. We eat well and I’ve actually begun to enjoy cooking, most days. I made fresh, beer battered mahi mahi sandwiches yesterday that were a big hit. Well that is all for now…I’ll try not to bore you with all the time I have on my hands the next few weeks. Fair warning though….things may get weirder on the website! Love to all….
